T O P I C R E V I E WVioletsI've been looking online, and I just can't figure out what type of tree it is. I'm not great at identifying foliage, but I'm getting better. The leaves are very large, like maple leaves. Ellynlvx http://green.kingcounty.gov/gonative/Plant.aspx?Act=view&PlantID=1 Is this it? Kind of hard to tell. Found this as well: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Big-Leaf-Maple-Tree/316272998445871 VioletsYes! Thank you, that's the one! I suppose I was glancing at other types of maple trees, and none of them looked like my friend out in front.Yep, poor tree lost a large branch (and I mean LARGE) due to wind, and my husband was wondering what kind it is so that he could know what he would be able to use the excess wood for. Thanks, Ellyn! EllynlvxYeah, they're the James Dean of the forest, they grow up too fast and die young.Violets quote:Originally posted by Ellynlvx:Yeah, they're the James Dean of the forest, they grow up too fast and die young.Aw... I LOVE our huge tree out front. That tree has the most loving vibe. I've been noticing more of them since I brought this up...quite a few in our back yard as well, along the fence (one is intertwined with a pine like they're hugging, how cute, hehe). But yes, I've noticed that their branches do break off easily when we have periods of heavy wind. It always makes me feel kinda bummed out. :-/PlutoSurvivorGood ID. I wonder if this big leaf maple can be tapped for syrup?PlutoSurvivor quote:Originally posted by Ellynlvx:Yeah, they're the James Dean of the forest, they grow up too fast and die young.Fun description. Violets quote:Originally posted by PlutoSurvivor:I wonder if this big leaf maple can be tapped for syrup? Now that would be cool! Somehow I don't think so, but I'll find out!I would not be able to hurt my favorite trees, though...not sure what tapping a maple involves. EllynlvxNo, that's the poor little Sugar Maple.Got a couple of those babies here. Not their natural habitat.
